How does a Discord leveling bot work?

Nova Bot awards XP whenever a member sends a message in a channel that is not excluded from XP. Each message earns a random amount between the server's minimum and maximum, which default to 15 and 25 XP. To keep members from farming XP by spamming, the bot awards XP at most once every 60 seconds per member.

Each member's XP and level are stored per server, and the level is calculated from their total XP. The higher the level, the more XP the next level takes. When a member crosses into a new level, the bot posts a level-up announcement and grants any role rewards tied to levels at or below the new level.

Members can check their own progress with /rank, which shows their level, their rank position, their total XP, and a progress bar toward the next level. /leaderboard shows the top 10 members by XP, so the level ladder turns into friendly competition.

How do I enable leveling on my Discord server?

Enabling leveling takes one slash command:

1. Run /config leveling on. You can also pass a channel in the same command to set where level-up announcements post.
2. Members start earning XP. The bot begins awarding XP for messages in your server right away.
3. Adjust the defaults. Use /config levelingxp to change the multiplier, enable voice XP, or exclude channels from XP.
